For our eighth employee spotlight, meet Becky Boutilier. Let’s dive in and learn more about her.
What do you do at our company?
I am the lead estimator and project manager in our design build division at Clintar Halifax. With this position I get to meet with each client, listen to their vision and then bring it to life. I am extremely lucky to work with some of the best horticulturists in the business.
What has been your favourite project so far?
My favourite project was by no means the biggest job, it was actually a very small job for a sweet old couple. They trusted me to dig up heirloom roses and transplant them at their granddaughter’s property, in hopes they would carry on, the roses had been in their family for generations. This little job had so much love and hope attached to it and has always stood out as my favourite.
What motivates you to wake up and go to work?
It’s easy to wake up knowing that people are trusting me with their savings and trusting me to build their dream of a beautiful outdoor living space. You can’t help but love your job when you get to create living art each day, even after 22 years it’s still does not get old, I love it.
What’s something most people don’t know about you?
Most people don’t know that I love history, and fantasy novels.
How do you balance your career and your family/personal life?
I try to leave my work at work and home at home. The balance has not always come easy, but I am getting better at managing personal time with age and experience.
What advice would you give to other women in the industry?
I would tell any female to do what you love and focus on learning everything in the trade. Run loaders, excavators, tractors, build walls, patios, gardens, plant flowers and cut trees. Don’t limit yourself to fit a stereotype.
What does a typical day of work look like for you?
It is always different from one day to the next, I could be drawing up plans, building estimates, hand picking plant orders, checking on crews or meeting with a client; there is never a dull moment around here.
What are three words you would use to describe Clintar?
Clintar is an elite landscape company, built around professionals in the industry. It’s nice to be able to do a job right and not cut corners.
What do you find most rewarding/challenging about your role?
Most rewarding is also the most challenging, which is the ability to build dreams.
If given the chance, who would you be for a day?
I would likely be my daughter, to make sure I was doing a good job raising her.
If you could interview one person (dead or alive) who would it be and why?
My sister who passed away years ago, I would love to see her. I do not think there are any close seconds.
What would you like to be famous for?
Honestly, my gardens! I will be that old lady publishing gardening books.
What inspires/motivates you?
My daughter, nature and respect.
I believe in doing a good job, meaning, landscape install is sustainable, affordable, has a visual impact and is designed around the homeowner’s personal style. Respect the client and your environment and anything is possible.
